Funke Akindele has the bigger numbers. That much is hard to argue with. Whether it makes her the bigger star is what fans of her and Toyin Abraham are fighting over again. Watch the full video HERE.
Funke's 2023 film A Tribe Called Judah crossed the ₦1 billion mark. Everybody Loves Jenifa followed with roughly ₦1.88 billion. Then Behind the Scenes grossed about ₦2.1 billion on its first reported final figures, making it the first Nollywood film past ₦2 billion.
Industry reports put the three films at a combined ₦5.39 billion, and the run has built her name as a filmmaker who understands marketing, audience and distribution as well as storytelling.
Toyin has her own milestone, though. Her film Oversabi Aunty reportedly earned ₦1.017 billion across West African cinemas. It was her cinema directorial debut, and the first Nollywood directorial debut to cross the billion-naira mark. The National Film and Video Censors Board later gave her a Box Office Champion Award.
On box office alone, then, Funke is ahead right now. But longevity, range, cultural pull and audience loyalty count too, and none of them fits neatly into a revenue table. Toyin has shown she can fill cinemas and keep a loyal fanbase while producing and directing.
So, family, over to you. If you could only pick one as Nollywood's biggest female star, who is it? And do the numbers decide it for you?
