Another 271 Nigerians Evacuated From South Africa Amid Migrant Crackdow

A fresh batch of 271 Nigerians has been successfully evacuated from South Africa back home to Nigeria, with the aircraft carrying them touching down at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Friday morning.

The evacuation adds to a growing number of Nigerians who have opted to leave South Africa amid escalating anti-immigrant sentiment and enforcement actions targeting undocumented foreign nationals in the country.

This latest group joins previous waves of returnees who have made the journey home as tensions in South Africa continue to simmer around immigration, jobs, and resource competition.

For many of those returning, the decision to leave represents both a practical response to genuine safety concerns and an emotionally difficult reckoning with lives, businesses, and relationships built over years in a country that no longer feels welcoming or safe for them to remain in.

Nigerian authorities have generally framed these evacuation efforts as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to protecting citizens abroad, though questions remain about what reintegration support, if any, awaits returnees once they land back in Nigeria.

As South Africa’s immigration crackdown shows little sign of easing, it’s likely that more evacuation flights will follow in the coming weeks, continuing to reshape the lives of Nigerians who once called South Africa home.
