Tyra Banks Reportedly Takes Netflix to Court

Tyra Banks, the supermodel and longtime host of “America’s Next Top Model,” is reportedly taking legal action against Netflix. The lawsuit reportedly follows the streaming giant’s release of a documentary examining the show’s run and legacy — a project Banks appears unhappy with, based on the decision to pursue legal recourse. While the exact grounds of her complaint haven’t been widely detailed, the timing suggests her issue lies with how the documentary portrayed either the show itself or her own role in shaping it over its many seasons.

“America’s Next Top Model” ran for years and became one of the most talked-about reality competition franchises of its era, launching the careers of numerous models while also drawing criticism over time for some of its more controversial challenges and commentary. Documentaries revisiting reality TV shows from the 2000s and 2010s have become

something of a trend recently, often digging into behind-the-scenes drama, contestant treatment, and the ethical questions that come with hindsight. It’s possible Banks takes issue with how she or the show’s production practices were characterized in Netflix’s retelling.

Legal disputes between talent and streaming platforms over documentary content aren’t new, and they often center on rights to likeness, contractual agreements about archival footage, or claims of defamation. Fans and industry watchers will be paying close attention to how this plays out, both because of Banks’ prominent public profile and because the outcome could set a precedent for how streamers handle unauthorized or unflattering documentary treatments of reality TV franchises going forward. DidiLawren will share more details as they emerge from either party.
