Halle Berry Ordered To Attend Therapy Sessions With Son Amid Olivier Martinez Custody Dispute

A California family court judge has ordered Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry to attend therapy sessions with her son, Maceo, in a ruling that changes the custody arrangements between her and her ex-husband, French actor Olivier Martinez. The story has been one of the most widely shared entertainment headlines this week.

What the filings say

According to court filings, the dispute escalated after Martinez's lawyers submitted a series of petitions to the court. these are reported to have claimed the existing custody arrangement had broken down, and that their son was under emotional strain because the two parents were not communicating well.

Responding to those filings, the judge ruled that Berry must attend sessions with Maceo in a therapist's office. The aim is reportedly to build a stable, long-term plan for the child's emotional wellbeing.

Olivier Martinez responds

Martinez has also spoken publicly about the ruling, through his legal representatives. They say the court's decision is not a public relations win aimed at damaging his ex-wife's image, but a step to protect his son's wellbeing.

They add that he says defending his child's mental health is his top priority as a father, and that he welcomes the court-ordered therapy so that both parents work within the same framework and respect the same boundaries.

The reaction

Reaction has been strong across news commentary and entertainment feeds. Some commentators have welcomed the ruling, saying a child's welfare must come first. Others side with Berry's supporters, who say a child's private emotional life should not become fuel for gossip, and that a mother should not be judged in public over it.

Whatever people think, the case is a reminder that a high-profile family dispute still comes down to a child's wellbeing, and that the public conversation can easily lose sight of that.
