The viral interaction between Nigerian comedian Real Warri Pikin (Anita Asuoha) and singer Timaya sparked a major social media debate regarding the boundaries of married female entertainers on stage.
The controversy kicked off in September 2026 at the AFRIMMA Awards (Africa Award) in Dallas, Texas, shortly after Real Warri Pikin won the award for Best Stand-Up Comedian. While Timaya was performing his hit song "Uku" on stage, he called for a woman to join him from backstage.
Real Warri Pikin came out, and as part of his energetic performance, Timaya encouraged her to jump on him. Despite some initial hesitation, she complied, leading to an intense on-stage moment where they danced and he lifted her. Timaya even jokingly yelled out an apology during the show to her husband, Ikechukwu.
Following the widespread criticism, Real Warri Pikin initially released a video acknowledging her actions and apologizing, noting that she acted "out of character" and that her husband was initially upset.
