High-Security Medical Evacuation Deployed at Abuja Airport Over Isolated Ebola Case

Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient has been evacuated to Switzerland under strict medical protocols, as health authorities continue efforts to prevent further transmission of the virus.

A high-security medical evacuation operation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has drawn attention after Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient was flown to Switzerland for further medical care.

The evacuation took place in the early hours of Monday, October 26, 2026, aboard a specialised medical aircraft, following heightened public health precautions at the airport’s private aviation terminal.

Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, subsequently confirmed the evacuation, stating that the patient’s condition had improved significantly before the transfer.

The development comes amid heightened public health surveillance following the confirmation of Nigeria’s first imported case of Ebola disease in the current outbreak.

Reports from the airport described a carefully coordinated operation involving ambulances, diplomatic vehicles and a medical evacuation aircraft.

According to media reports, airport officials restricted access to the private aviation section while arrangements for the transfer were underway.

The operation was conducted under strict infection prevention and control measures, reflecting the additional precautions required when transporting a patient with a confirmed infectious disease.

Minister Pate confirmed that the patient had departed Nigeria for Switzerland with his approval. He said she was clinically improved, stable, conscious and able to communicate, with laboratory results approaching baseline levels.

However, the minister cautioned that an improvement in the patient’s condition did not necessarily mean she was no longer infectious. Strict public health protocols therefore remained essential throughout the evacuation.

The patient’s husband, who remained asymptomatic, accompanied her on the flight.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the patient is a 42-year-old woman who arrived in Nigeria from Uganda via Addis Ababa on October 3.

She developed symptoms on October 7 and subsequently sought medical attention at private health facilities in Abuja.

The infection was confirmed by laboratory testing on October 20, prompting an intensified public health response.

The case involves the Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola virus responsible for an ongoing outbreak in parts of Central and East Africa.

Following confirmation, Nigerian authorities activated emergency response arrangements, including patient isolation, contact tracing, surveillance and infection prevention measures.

The precise circumstances surrounding the patient’s infection remain under investigation.
