President Donald Trump has put the blame for his party's mixed midterm results on the Republican candidates themselves.
Speaking at a press briefing today, Thursday 5 November 2026, he set aside the usual party diplomacy and said the candidates, not him, were responsible for the shortfall.
Addressing international media and White House correspondents, Trump pointed to what he sees as a gap between the size of his rallies and the final vote counts.
He said his visits to key swing states, including a stop alongside Nicki Minaj, drew what he described as record crowds. In his view, the local and federal candidates then failed to turn that energy into votes at the polls.
"If I was on the ballot, we would have won. The crowds were there, they were huge, but the candidates didn't translate that support into votes," Trump said.
In his telling, the party's shortfall was a failure of the candidates' own campaigns, not a rejection of his "Make America Great Again" agenda.
