Chris Brown Avoids Immediate Jail for 2023 London Nightclub Attack

Chris Brown has been given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over a 2023 nightclub attack in London. At Southwark Crown Court on Monday 26 October, Judge Tony Baumgartner made clear the singer would not go to prison straight away. Under a suspended sentence he is only jailed if he commits another offence.

Brown, 37, admitted affray in July over an incident at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair on 19 February 2023, when a music producer was hit on the head with a bottle. The charge carried a maximum of three years, Good Morning America reports. Earlier, Brown had denied more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Footage played in court showed Brown being pulled away from the victim after striking him twice on the head with a bottle, ABC News reports. The judge called the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head "plainly dangerous" and said it risked a more serious injury than the one the victim suffered.

Judge Baumgartner said the guilty plea and several mitigating factors, including stable employment and charity work, meant Brown did not qualify for a custodial sentence. He also noted that Brown had kept a clean record in recent years, while acknowledging previous convictions.

Brown's vocal coach and co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was given four months, also suspended for 12 months. Both men had pleaded guilty. Brown thanked the judge as he left the dock and nodded to supporters in the public gallery, and some fans had queued outside court about an hour before it opened.

For background, Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel in May 2025 after flying in for tour dates. He spent nearly a week in custody before being released on £5 million bail, which allowed him to continue his tour.
